Mirror's Edge is a first person action adventure ,platformer developed by DICE who is famous for creating the Battle Field series.initially released for the consoles was eventually ported for pc and was released this year.after a slew of crappy high profile console to pc ports mirors edge comes as a knight in shining armour, its true that it does have it share of flaws but it is one of those rare expariments which havent gone totally haywire.
Ok about the story first,it's not another half life 2 or N.O.L.F but it is very average even though the premise is interesting but there isn't much to spoil because the plot can be easily predicted.the protagonist is faith who is a runner in a dystopian city which is controlled by major callagan, communication in the city is heavily monitored and any riots or uprising are thwarted immediately by the authoritarian government. faith and her friend Celeste are runners who deliver messages between the revolutionary groups which reside in the city.one day faith receives a call from her sister who says that she has been wrongly accused for murdering Pope who is running for mayor in the upcoming elections in the city.so faith being a rebel that she is goes to the murder scene to help her sister out there she finds a piece of paper which has icarus written on it,so the rest of the game is pretty much about faith finding more information on icarus and to save her sister from immenent doom.
Platforming in FPS has been taken to a whole new level in mirror's edge.faith can perform a widerange of acrobatic moves which can used for traversing the everwhite city during missions.several moves which we have seen in prince of persia games have been implemented in first person here .faith can jump, wallrun, grab polls while passing through roof tops and buildings of edge city, this further enhances the replayability factor of the game as you will want to experiment with them as the game progresses, eventhough the charachters movements are well handled the game suffers from poor map design, mirror's edge primarily bieng a game which emphasizes on seamless flow of movement gets really frustrating when your suddenly stopped by erratically placed objects in the map.this hamper's the flow of the game to a great extent and sometimes it gets really frustrating, but if you manage to make through a level without any misplaced jumps the feeling is really rewarding.with added time trial modes and online leader boards the experience is quite fulfilling but not without frustration.
Mirror's Edge doesnt follow in the footsteps of gears of war or half life 2 in portraying the dystopian future as a alien mauled grey world but instead it gives you a clean white city ruled by humans who have a really bad case of OCPD.the visulas in mirrors edge compliment the theme of the game really well, the tall white buildings and ample dose of HDR are prevalent through out the game.as mirror's edge is based on the unreal3 engine any system with a 8600gt can run the game at nominal settings without breaking a sweat and can still retain all the eye candy that the game has to offer.
Apart from Having great Graphics the game also delivers in the sound and music department the gush of wind that graces your ear when you run has been beautifully captured in mirror's edge.the whole feeling of living in the city is completed by excellent sounds of cars and airconditioners which emminate when you are passing through the rooftops.the soundtrack is tailor made as it suits the fast paced action of the game really well.the ending song of the game called still alive sung by lisa misovsky is the best song i have ever heard after still alive from portal.
So Mirrors edge isnt completely messed up but it is sad that developers havent exploited the potential of the game well enough .the game delivers in some aspects but the satisfaction you get quickly becomes an illusion due to its bad design flaws.Time trails and leader boards are the only factors which contribute when it comes to replayability and it is quite fun.with a dlc containing new maps bieng released mirror's edge isnt that bad at all.Play the game for what it is iam pretty sure you will have the urge to run after a while fortunately not from the game.
Rating:6/10
