Mirror's Edge is a first person action adventure ,platformer developed by DICE who is famous for creating the Battle Field series.initially released for the consoles was eventually ported for pc and was released this year.after a slew of crappy high profile console to pc ports mirors edge comes as a knight in shining armour, its true that it does have it share of flaws but it is one of those rare expariments which havent gone totally haywire.

Ok about the story first,it's not another half life 2 or N.O.L.F but it is very average even though the premise is interesting but there isn't much to spoil because the plot can be easily predicted.the protagonist is faith who is a runner in a dystopian city which is controlled by major callagan, communication in the city is heavily monitored and any riots or uprising are thwarted immediately by the authoritarian government. faith and her friend Celeste are runners who deliver messages between the revolutionary groups which reside in the city.one day faith receives a call from her sister who says that she has been wrongly accused for murdering Pope who is running for mayor in the upcoming elections in the city.so faith being a rebel that she is goes to the murder scene to help her sister out there she finds a piece of paper which has icarus written on it,so the rest of the game is pretty much about faith finding more information on icarus and to save her sister from immenent doom.

Platforming in FPS has been taken to a whole new level in mirror's edge.faith can perform a widerange of acrobatic moves which can used for traversing the everwhite city during missions.several moves which we have seen in prince of persia games have been implemented in first person here .faith can jump, wallrun, grab polls while passing through roof tops and buildings of edge city, this further enhances the replayability factor of the game as you will want to experiment with them as the game progresses, eventhough the charachters movements are well handled the game suffers from poor map design, mirror's edge primarily bieng a game which emphasizes on seamless flow of movement gets really frustrating when your suddenly stopped by erratically placed objects in the map.this hamper's the flow of the game to a great extent and sometimes it gets really frustrating, but if you manage to make through a level without any misplaced jumps the feeling is really rewarding.with added time trial modes and online leader boards the experience is quite fulfilling but not without frustration.

Mirror's Edge doesnt follow in the footsteps of gears of war or half life 2 in portraying the dystopian future as a alien mauled grey world but instead it gives you a clean white city ruled by humans who have a really bad case of OCPD.the visulas in mirrors edge compliment the theme of the game really well, the tall white buildings and ample dose of HDR are prevalent through out the game.as mirror's edge is based on the unreal3 engine any system with a 8600gt can run the game at nominal settings without breaking a sweat and can still retain all the eye candy that the game has to offer.

Apart from Having great Graphics the game also delivers in the sound and music department the gush of wind that graces your ear when you run has been beautifully captured in mirror's edge.the whole feeling of living in the city is completed by excellent sounds of cars and airconditioners which emminate when you are passing through the rooftops.the soundtrack is tailor made as it suits the fast paced action of the game really well.the ending song of the game called still alive sung by lisa misovsky is the best song i have ever heard after still alive from portal.

So Mirrors edge isnt completely messed up but it is sad that developers havent exploited the potential of the game well enough .the game delivers in some aspects but the satisfaction you get quickly becomes an illusion due to its bad design flaws.Time trails and leader boards are the only factors which contribute when it comes to replayability and it is quite fun.with a dlc containing new maps bieng released mirror's edge isnt that bad at all.Play the game for what it is iam pretty sure you will have the urge to run after a while fortunately not from the game.

Rating:6/10

Apple Safari 4: A Review

Posted by Anonymous On 8:03 AM 0 Responses

Apple recently launched the Safari web browser's latest iteration (Version 4) for all the major platforms. It boasts some really nifty new features like much faster web page loading, especially with JavaScript loading, new interface tweaks to suit each OS's native UI and some more under the hood tweaks that normal users will probably find uninteresting.

The Look

Apple are masters (usually) at interface and UI design. And the new Safari shows their new departure from making apps with only the gray-ish interface of Mac OS X Leopard. The Windows XP and Vista versions get interfaces that look like they gel with the OS. A minor gripe however, is the somewhat odd looking title/tab bar on the Windows versions. The other thing I'm not too fond of, is Safari's relentless copying of Chrome's innovative interface ideas and then changing them slightly to make it look original.

  • For instance, the title/tab bar. If just one tab is open, the tab header (if I can call it that) takes up the whole of the title bar. But open up a new one, and suddenly both share the real estate space of the title bar equally. This is somewhat different from Chrome's tab handling, wherein each tab header takes up the same space. Chrome's I think, was a more neat design.
  • The second instance is the toolbar, which is lifted straight off of Chrome but with the older Safari's "Report Bug" spider icon having some originality.
  • The third, is Top Sites. Safari's new feature that mimmicks Chrome's start page featuring most visited websites. Except in true Apple fashion, it's been 3D-ed a little and with neon lights around the boxes showing up on mouse-overs.
To be honest, I don't like this new mix match approach of Apple's. And why if Apple is trying to blend in each OS's UI so much, is history shown with that "Oh so Finder-ish" sidebar? The cover flow idea is, well ... inspired really. And looks great too but works only with History. Why can't I switch tabs using cover flow? Here, I have to rely on the somewghat conventional Ctrl-Tab key combo.

Now, it would be wrong of me to rant just to overcompensate for being a hopeless Apple fanboy. The thing I do like about Safari is it's ambition in making Web browsing a richer experience. Top Sites has some nifty animation when you click a page or return from a "Top Site-d" page back to Top Sites. Another nifty animation is when when a page is "peeled" off from the title bar to a new window. But as always, these things are resource hungry. And Apple recommend 64 MB VRAM. Not RAM, VRAM. That's the first time a browser is asking such graphical resources!

The Feel

Apple's Safari page claims the new browser delivers a 100/100 score on Acid Test 3 (On the Mac OS X, of course). Credit where credit is due, well done Apple. But what about Windows? Well, on my machine, a very modest Athlon 64 3500+ with 1 GB RAM and 256 MB VRAM, it didn't feel much faster than Firefox (my browser of choice). But on effect heavy websites, it does feel a tad sharper and quicker. That said, another blog said with 14 or so tabs open, Safari gobbled up 400 MB of RAM! This is nigh unacceptable. I'm sure the optimization for the Mac is better. But wow, Sims 2 feels like less of a strain! Safari also suffers from Chrome's disability of not having customizable add-ons (an area where Firefox wins everybody and their grandma's hearts). Add to that the relative inconsistency in their interface (some parts being really jazzy, the others spartan) and kind of sluggish, un-Apple-ish feel on lower end machines, Safari just doesn't feel as good as it looks.

Oh and the installer is 30+ MB. Tsk tsk. Honestly, Apple. You're capable of better.
