My C: Drive

Brings Innovation to Light

  • Welcome Message

Hi guys, We decided to write this blog to bring about information about the new outbreak in gadgets and software. We don't promise you that, we would be the first to write on that subject, but if we do, that would be the best. Hope you all find this blog interesting.

The world apparently isn't full of money making diglets (Hello, Microsoft!). There exist some very thoughtful souls who code some of the best programs out there. Innovative, useful and very likeable. I'd like to honour them with something I like to call the "I'd Love To Have It On MY C: DRIVE" award. (ILTHIOMCD)

Internet:

Firefox

The poster boy of open-source software is by far the best browser. Add extensions, make it better and feel like a true nerd!

Pidgin

Except for one (Google Talk), I hate all Messengers. Which is why I think Pidgin is right up there with sliced bread and mutton biriyani! Pidgin simply allows you to add your "friends" from most IM (Instant messaging) protocols into one convenient window from where you can cuss at all your contacts in one go!

Media & Entertainment:

Songbird

SongBird has the same features but gets rid of all the unnecessary crap that iTunes loads. Scared because you have an iPod? Songbird's support for that and a Lyrics extension that finds lyrics for Hindi songs, is the reason I don't come out of the house much.

VLC

I don't have anything funny to say about this one. VLC plays everything. Everything! DVDs, FLVs, MKVs. Everything!

System Utilities:

7-Zip

Despite having a daft name, 7-Zip is a wonderful little utility that lets you ... ahem ... unzip zipped packages. Ok that was weird. Basically, it .... ahem ... extracts stuff from .zip and .rar files. Why do I feel uncomfortable? Damn it it's a nice software. Download it!

BurnAware

BurnAware Free is a superb little burning utlity that does just that. Burns, no added sugar nothing. The new version even burns Blu-Ray and supports burning Bootable ISOs. Hallelujah!http://www.burnaware.com/

FoxIt Reader

Are you irritated as I am that Adobe Reader launches something called "AdobeReaderSpeedup" at boot time? I am. FoxIt Reader is your oasis! Quick start-up and removal of unnecessary features that home users never use are just what the doctor ordered.

Graphics & Multimedia Authoring:

The GIMP

Ok yes, it's called the GIMP! (Apparently, GNU Image Manipulation Program) And it's a nifty image editing software whose capabilities rival the Big Daddy: Photoshop! Except for the silly name, its a top notch software but with a slightly weird interface. But its FREE! So all is forgiven.

IrfanView

Batch processing used to be a pain in the platter. Till IrfanView came along that is. Yes, it has a stupid interface. Yes, it has a stupid icon. But it supprots a ridiculous number of file formats. You'd be stupid to miss it.

Audacity

It's the sound manipulation software that makes Sound Forge look bad. Again, interface is little tasteless. But C'mon! Miles ahead in What It Offers vs. Price.

AviDeMux

Saran's favorite video editing software is a fine one. Another SourceForge download that simply shines in the potential that it has. A bit more polishing up, a better name and product art style can make this powerful pretender a fearful predator of video authoring.
